How to safely reconnect with friends and family
What an unprecedented couple of months it has been! City Strider suspended its games during the country’s lockdown, but we’re very excited to get back into full operation now that Alert Levels have dropped. However we understand that it is an uncertain time that should be treated with caution, and that many of you are still anxious about heading out in these loosened restrictions. So we wanted to give you some ideas on how you can reconnect with your loved ones in a safe way, while still having a bit of an adventure.
1. Visit the outdoor hidden gems in your area
Now is the perfect time to go out and explore your own city, and there will be plenty of natural and man-made destinations for you to see. After being cooped up so long inside, you’ll have a greater appreciation of what the outdoors has to offer. Perhaps you’ll finally do the street art trail if you’re in Dunedin, or drive out to the Red Rocks Reserve in Wellington.
2. Host your own “Would I Lie To You” game
You’ve probably seen the popular BBC show and it’s New Zealand version, so why not give it a go yourself? Choose a host to run the session and think of some lies, while the rest of your group sends in a true fact that no one else knows. Once you’ve started the game, the host will randomly give you either your story or a lie to read out. It’s then up to everyone else to ask questions and decide if you’re telling the truth. You’ll be surprised how well your friends and family can fib, and what stories actually end up being true!
3. Play a virtual adventure game
City Strider used the time in lockdown to create a new free virtual game called The Homebound Heist, where you use your phone to help an old friend solve puzzles and clues. It’s a fun half-hour game that can be played by anyone, anywhere. Created to offer a new experience, we’re also aiming to encourage donations to charities or businesses in need during this stressful time. Watch this space for more virtual experiences from City Strider. There are also plenty of other virtual game options like Geoguessr, where you navigate your way home on Google Maps, or the variety of sites that host thousands of old-school flash games.
4. At home escape room
Hot off the explosion in popularity in escape rooms, board game-style at home escape rooms offer the same intensity and intrigue without having to leave your house. Games include an engaging backstory along with elements like puzzles, cards and riddles. We recommend one we’ve tried ourselves called Exit: The Game, which you can purchase directly from their website.
5. Try out geocaching
You’ve probably heard this term before, but never tried it - better late than never! Geocaching is an activity where you locate small containers at specific locations around your city by using GPS. All you need to do is download the free app onto your phone, log in, and you’re away laughing. You can find out more from the official website here.
6. Take part in a virtual pub quiz
Virtual Pub Quiz is a YouTube channel that offers a tonne of self-contained quizzes, and even the option to join in live once a week. Or you could choose to host your own on your video chat software choice, just nominate a question master and visit one of the many quiz question generator sites out there.
7. Enjoy a City Strider adventure game
City Strider is open and ready to offer you a unique and immersive experience around your city. We have taken all precautions to ensure your safety, and are following government guidelines at all times. Most of our games take place outside where you’ll be away from other people, and our partnering establishments are also making sure that your safety and comfort is paramount. You can find out what precautions we have taken here.
We hope you and your friends and family are doing well, it has been a very tough period and being apart from one another has only made it harder. But we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel, and we thank you for continuing to follow social distancing measures and for being kind. Enjoy catching up with each other, and we can’t wait to see you soon!
